Why Choose AHS?

There are a number of geriatric psychiatric facilities across the country. However, these units are by and large “general psychiatric units” mixing patients of all age groups and diagnosis. Less frequently, there may be available a unit that admits only seniors, but most mix individuals with a primary diagnosis other than psychiatric with those that do. Assurance Health is one of the very small number of hospitals in the state and US that focuses on and admits only senior adults with a primary psychiatric diagnosis, and will do so for those with medical and other secondary diagnoses, taking into account the unique, medical physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges of each older adult patient:

  • In-Patient Unit: Our in-patient area is specifically designed for the comfort and safety of our senior adult population. The design and layout includes age appropriate lighting, wall colors, hand rails, and flooring for our patients.
  • Mulit-Discipline Treatment Approach: Our staff of psychiatrists, psychologists, internal medicine/geriatric physicians, nurse practitioner, social workers and therapist (activity, occupational, physical and speech) all assist the patients to better understand their specific symptoms and triggers of both their psychiatric and medical conditions. Individual specific strategies and treatments are developed for managing the symptoms to assist each patient’s ability to interact with others. Daily, each patient will also participate in events such as exercise, nutrition, groups and stress management .
  • Medication:Our Medical Staff works in collaboration to identify and monitor for specific medical or psychiatric symptoms that may be caused by age related reactions to medications. During each patients stay, their individual medication regiment will be designed and implemented for optimal effectiveness.
